Snow Day is a 3v3, unranked ice hockey variant that was teased in the Mutator Mashup trailer in October. The ball has been replaced with an oversized puck and the pitch done up to look like some ghastly Santa's Grotto at a high-end mall.
I jumped onto Snow Day for a few games this morning and quizzed the odd player for their take on the festivities. Widespread confusion that the ice isn't slippery—as far as I can tell, handling hasn't been affected at all. On the other hand, the puck is a calculated game-changer. Those large flat sides cause it to hug the walls instead of bouncing back, and with enough force it can surf the full length of the boundary. Stay defensive, and if you haven't learned to play off the wall yet, Snow Day will fix that. It feels like a more considered expansion than the unpredictable Mutator Mashup. Plus there are prezzies: antlers, antennas, santa hats, christmas trees, and my personal favourite, the tartan rocket trail.
Collectors be warned: these will only unlock until January 4. After weeks playing Fallout 4, exposure to bright colours can be a bit confronting.
Never fear though, because next time you jump into there will be a new DLC pack awaiting, offering an apocalypse themed arena full of soothing, inoffensive brown hues. The 'Chaos Run' DLC pack is available today and, in addition to the arena pictured above, there's two new battle-cars in the form of 'Ripper' and 'Grog'.
There are also six new decals for each of these, and two paint types, wheels, rocket trails, toppers and antennas. Basically, you can deck your battle cars out in all manner of misanthropic wasteland garb. The pack will set you back. There's also a patch to usher in the DLC, which replaces the main menu theme and setting, and removes Timewarp and Beach Ball from the Mutator Mashup playlist. Because these slot machine mechanics prey on people who are susceptible to that kind of shit, the same kind of people who become addicted to gambling. These boxes are designed to extract money from whales, people who can't control themselves and will keep opening boxes until they finally get the thing they want. They could just have kept selling individual skins for fixed prices, but no, they had to turn it into a manipulative gambling compulsion thing shame on them Have you ever actually spoken to a whale? A lot of these people are spending money they can't afford to spend, but they can't help themselves, it's a compulsion.

We'll be posting the rest of our awards and personal picks daily as we approach the end of the year, which we're collecting Samuel Roberts: Simple and brilliant, Rocket League was one of my main obsessions this year, and the first competitive game I truly became absorbed. I ve had so much heartache in ranked, but so many wonderful goals, near-misses and epic saves, too.
While everyone I know has pretty much stopped playing at this point, the five-minute matches are a perfect break between other games that require a bigger time commitment. A well-deserved success for Psyonix, even though I hate this game (and also love it). James Davenport: I should probably get a chair without wheels. No other game has elicited an involuntary kick from both legs at once.
It s always as I speed up towards the ball after watching a play unfold. I ll likely miss, kick the floor as if it will somehow correct my virtual car s velocity, and send myself rolling towards the back of my room, blurting a word or two I shouldn t. It s exhilarating. Rocket League is the only sports game with controls that aren t abstracted by layers and layers of mechanics. You drive fast, jump, and hit the ball. There s a real sense of precise control over a body, similar to control in a real sport, which means behaviors and plays form naturally.

I thought his refusal to play Dota 2 ever again would save him from my particular part of this hobby, but it hasn t—and I m delighted. Phil Savage: I live deep in the depths of bronze league—a world where six cars flip towards a stationary ball and all miss. Us bronze leaguers might understand the flow and beauty of the game, but we don't have the technical expertise to translate it into action. Short matches, and the ever-present possibility of an insane comeback means even your worst night at Rocket League might still wind up a triumph. Tyler Wilde: I ve played over 100 hours of Rocket League, and I love it even when it s excruciating to play (two own goals in a row will do it).
3D Pong is what it is, brilliant for its distillation of sport. Like Pong, being good at Rocket League starts with knowing the bounces. Once you know exactly what sort of bounce the ball is going to take, you can start to plan your passes, shots, saves and returns. The aerial maneuvering is a skill on top of that, but doesn t necessarily trump prediction and positioning, and I love how players can be differently good at it. Finesse aerial shots, solid playmaking, heroic saves, determined clearing, and fights along the boards all matter. Team chemistry also matters, as there are no strictly defined player roles, and no programmed structure to a match outside of the physics and the goal lines.

But for developer Psyonix, it's also proven incredibly lucrative, to the tune of—hold on to your Santa hats—nearly $50 million in revenue, a figure that the describes, with just a wee bit of understatement, as 'unusual' for an independently published game. Psyonix spent about two years and close to $2 million making the game, according to the report, which it funded through contract work on other titles. 'We paid the bills by working on some of the biggest games in the industry,' founder Dave Hagewood said, including Mass Effect 3 and Gears of War. Interestingly, the addition of Back to the Future's famous to the game was actually the result of Universal Pictures approaching the studio, and not the other way around. That was apparently when the developers first realized they might have a big hit on their hands, although Hagewood added, 'It didn't really sink in until they told me they had to get Steven Spielberg's approval.' Since then, Psyonix has done a deal with Bethesda to from Fallout 4 to the game, and more recently it added a pile of holiday goodies through an update that includes antlers, Christmas trees, and, an unranked three-on-three play style that trades the giant soccer ball for a giant hockey puck.

Get your snow tires on—winter has fallen across Rocket League, bringing with it the new Snow Day mode and a pile of Christmas gifts.
Snow Day is a 3v3, unranked ice hockey variant that was teased in the Mutator Mashup trailer in October. The ball has been replaced with an oversized puck and the pitch done up to look like some ghastly Santa's Grotto at a high-end mall.
I jumped onto Snow Day for a few games this morning and quizzed the odd player for their take on the festivities. Widespread confusion that the ice isn't slippery—as far as I can tell, handling hasn't been affected at all. On the other hand, the puck is a calculated game-changer. Those large flat sides cause it to hug the walls instead of bouncing back, and with enough force it can surf the full length of the boundary. Stay defensive, and if you haven't learned to play off the wall yet, Snow Day will fix that. It feels like a more considered expansion than the unpredictable Mutator Mashup. Plus there are prezzies: antlers, antennas, santa hats, christmas trees, and my personal favourite, the tartan rocket trail.
Collectors be warned: these will only unlock until January 4. After weeks playing Fallout 4, exposure to bright colours can be a bit confronting.
Never fear though, because next time you jump into there will be a new DLC pack awaiting, offering an apocalypse themed arena full of soothing, inoffensive brown hues. The 'Chaos Run' DLC pack is available today and, in addition to the arena pictured above, there's two new battle-cars in the form of 'Ripper' and 'Grog'.
There are also six new decals for each of these, and two paint types, wheels, rocket trails, toppers and antennas. Basically, you can deck your battle cars out in all manner of misanthropic wasteland garb. The pack will set you back. There's also a patch to usher in the DLC, which replaces the main menu theme and setting, and removes Timewarp and Beach Ball from the Mutator Mashup playlist. Later this month the will roll out, which replaces the giant ball with a giant hockey puck. Oh, and are coming too. What a strange, fascinating universe Rocket League resides in.

I understand this subbredit is for cracks and things, but the game is so worth the price it's being sold that there shouldn't even be a mention or thought about an online fix for it. Believe me, I am all against Denuvo and against AAA games being $60 and greedy companies full of liars, but this is something I won't appreciate. I recommend buying this game since it's a lot of fun and Developers deserve the money. I have 200+ hours put into it and I have no intentions of putting it away anywhere soon.
